Don’t Assume with Manager Communication Preferences

Hello Leaders,

As part of TAP kickoff meetings I ask hiring managers about their communication preferences (e-mail, face to face, text, etc.). The responses to that question vary greatly depending on the individual!

Some leaders prefer face to face conversations on at least a weekly basis, while others have devised a fairly sophisticated escalation structure for getting in touch with them, e.g. “For normal day to day stuff e-mail me, if you need a faster answer then text me, for emergencies, call my cell.” Some leaders are text people, others rarely use it, and the list goes on.

Don’t leave any room for guess work with communication preferences, particularly with new hires. Let your staff know how you prefer to be communicated with and encourage others at your organization to do the same.
